The Andhra Pradesh Government has officially renamed Jonnagiri village in Tuggali mandal, Kurnool district, as Swarnagiri, reflecting its emergence as a major gold mining hub. The new name, which translates to “Golden Hill,” highlights the region’s growing importance in India’s mining sector following the launch of the country’s first private-sector commercial gold mine.
The renaming coincides with the commencement of commercial operations at the Swarnagiri Gold Mining Project, a landmark initiative expected to boost domestic gold production and attract further investments in the mining industry. The project is projected to produce approximately 400 kilograms of gold in its first year, with annual production expected to increase to nearly one tonne in the coming years. Along with creating employment opportunities for local residents, the project is anticipated to contribute significantly to the economic growth and industrial development of Kurnool district, positioning Swarnagiri as an important mining destination in Andhra Pradesh.
