India’s First Private Gold Mine Begins Commercial Operations

The Swarnagiri Gold Mining Project (formerly Jonnagiri) in Tuggali mandal, Kurnool district, has officially commenced commercial operations, marking a historic milestone as India’s first private-sector commercial gold mine since Independence. Developed with an investment of approximately ₹405 crore, the project is expected to significantly boost domestic gold production while supporting the country’s vision of strengthening its mining sector and reducing dependence on imported gold.

The mine is projected to produce around 400 kilograms of gold during its first year of operation, with annual production expected to increase to nearly one tonne in the coming years. In addition to enhancing mineral production, the project is expected to create around 700 direct and indirect employment opportunities, benefiting local communities and contributing to the economic development of Kurnool district. The launch of the mine is also expected to attract further investments in mining, infrastructure, and industrial development across the region.
